Particle FX for DAZ|Studio

Setting Particle Shapes

The Set Basic Shape Operator assigns a simple shape primitive to the particles.

The Set Scene Shape Operator assigns a shape from the scene to the particles.

The Billboard Target is used to select the camera that triangle or square sprites should point towards.

If Billboard Stays Up is set to "On" any billboarded sprite will automatically keeps it's shape Y-Axis aligned with the scene Y-axis.

The Shape control is used to select the type of shape that the particles will be assigned.

The Shape Parameter has options of Triangle, Square, Tetrahedron, Cube, Octahedron, Sphere32, Sphere72, Sphere128, Sphere242, Sphere 512, Cylinder, Cone and Crossed Planes.
The Billboard Target Parameter sets a target for bill boarding the particle shapes.  Bill Boarding is a technique that changes the shape's rotation so that it faces towards the Billboard Target, which is usually a camera.  This technique is most useful with the Square and Triangle shapes.  By bill boarding those shapes to the camera, very complex effects can be built with very few shapes.

Important Note:  The Billboard Target parameter is NOT saved out if you save the settings using the File->Save As->Pose Preset menu.  Billboard Targets have to be reset when the pose is applied.

Each of the basic shapes has a size of about 1 Daz Unit ( 1 centimeter).

The Set Scene Shape lets the user select an object in the scene to use as the particle shape.

The Billboard Target is used to select the camera that triangle or square sprites should point towards.

If Billboard Stays Up is set to "On" any billboarded sprite will automatically keeps it's shape Y-Axis aligned with the scene Y-axis.

The Node Shape To Use control is used to select the node that will be copied to make a shape for the particles.

The Set Scene Shape captures a copy of the selected geometry as it is seen in the view.  So if there are any morphs or other modifiers applied to the shape they will be reflected in the captured copy.

If the selected shape is a Camera, Light, D-Form, Figure or a Particle Element, the selection will be ignored.

Also, make sure that the selected shape is centered on the scene origin as the Set Scene Shape uses the origin as the center of the shape.  Any translations from or rotations about the origin or scaling of the shape will be included in the captured shape.

Figures cannot be selected, only individual nodes or props can be used.

The target shape can be hidden or deleted after it has been selected and copied by the Operator.  But if it is deleted and the shape selection is changed,  the shape will be lost and the object will have to be reloaded and selected again.

If the Shape is "None" then the particle's shape will be unchanged if it already has one.
